Around 150 different languages are spoken families in the borough[1]. Around 17,000 people (6% of the population) speak a main language other than English, mostly EU and African languages.

The most common main languages after English spoken by pupils in Lambeth schools being Portuguese (7% of pupils), Spanish (5%), Somali (4.5%), French (3.7%), Yoruba (3.4%), Akan /Twi-Fante (2.7%), Polish (2.6%), Arabic (2.5%) and Bengali (1.6%)[2]. There has been a significant increase in non-English main languages in the last twenty years.
